The Tenth House The Tenth House There are four houses known as the Cardinal Points and these are the first , fourth , seventh and tenth houses. These four energy channels (Angles) are considered action points in the horoscope. The first house cusp or the Ascendant and the tenth house cusp or the Midheaven also known as the MC are the two most active areas in a natal chart. We will go into more detail on a page which will be titled "Angles" in the near future. When Transiting Planets cross these areas of life, as all houses define areas of life, events often take place. Now much depends on the planet crossing this area and the energy it represents. Every house cusp defines a particular area of life and these areas of life are enhanced when Transiting Planets or Progressed Planets energy each house, crossing the cusp. The Tenth and First house cusps far outweigh the other ten areas of life represented by each house cusp, although one usually experiences a shift as the Outer Planets cross this threshold. The Tenth House cusp or the MC describe your occupation and the actual point and ruling sign often is suggestive of the type of work you should be doing in your life. This is not necessarily what you are doing with your life, but definitely what you should be doing with it. When doing an occupational profile this is the first place an Astrologer will look to define what we should be doing with our lives. It should however be pointed out that the Moon’s Nodes are also very indicative of what one should be doing with their life. The Tenth House deals directly with your worldly ambitions, your outer goals and often portrays the ego and some of its characteristics, although the Ascendant Sign is even more descriptive of this. When a planet in transit crosses this energy point quite often there are changes to our occupation and our status in life. As the fourth house cusp is always directly in opposition to the MC, when a planet crosses the tenth house cusp it is also in Opposition to the Fourth House Cusp. During these transformational periods, the home and family will also be affected by what is taking place within your occupation. The sign ruling the tenth house cusp, especially if it is a Cardinal Sign, can depict public recognition, especially if it is in a Cardinal Point which is between 29 degrees of the Mutable Sign before the Cardinal Sign or 0 to 1 degree of the Cardinal Sign. An example of this would be having a sign of 29 degrees Virgo on the MC or 0-1 degree Libra on the MC. Mercury in the natal chart sits fairly dormant until it becomes activated by a Transit or Progression. Much of its energies deals with mental conceptualization and communication. No Retrograde Planets in a Chart The energies of a planets in retrograde in an Astrology chart tend to make us look inward. Those with several retrogrades in their chart (and the magic number seems to be 5) tend to be introverted, even subdued and much to themselves. The energies have difficulties working their way to the surface and are stifled. It takes great effort to bring the energies to the surface and make the necessary adjustments to challenge these so-called deficiencies. Personally, this Astrologer does not believe in deficiencies. I tend to look at it as harnessed energy waiting for the opportune moment to be released. Those people without retrogrades in their birth charts are in the minority. It is said that roughly seven percent of people have this phenomena. It is believed that the energies of all the planets are released and given free reign and allowed to flow freely. This in turn can create an individual who may lack patience and they often avoid using a cautious approach. The waiting game is not part of their nature and they much prefer to move things along. There is usually great energy behind these individuals and they work tirelessly towards the achievements of their objectives in life. They have strong willpower and are persistent in their efforts to succeed. They move forward similar to Aries often advancing with little afterthought, if any, and they rarely disbelieve in their own abilities. As a result, they are normally quite successful. Some individuals without retrograde planets in their chart do fall from time to time; however, this will not stop them from getting back up and moving ahead again. Planetary Returns PLANETARY RETURNS All of the planets move around our Sun in the same direction and have their own cycle time depending on their distance from the Sun. The natal or birth chart is a snapshot of the heavens at the moment of our birth. From that moment on, the planets continue on their rotational path around the Sun and this continual movement of the planets is referred to as transiting planets. All of the planets eventually return to their original location that it was in at the moment of our birth (natal chart placement) but the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) take a long time to complete this cycle. Upon being at the same degree and sign that it was at the moment of birth, the planet has made its return. Each planet takes a different length of time. The inner planets move more quickly and the outer planets take a much longer time to return. We do not live long enough to experience some of the outer planet's return. Pluto Retrograde Pluto Retrograde Pluto moves in and out of retrograde several times each year. It remains in retrograde for approximately 150 days a year, often lasting for several months at a time. Transiting Pluto is a powerhouse in the horoscope, and it intensifies in strength when it makes aspects to planets and points within the natal chart or the progressed chart. The orb for influence in the transit of Pluto can be felt for those with a strong sensitivity up to 5 degrees while approaching (0 degrees being direct) and 2 degrees separating (after being direct and moving away). While in progression, it is most significant when it comes within 15 minutes of being direct. When Pluto moves into the retrograde motion, it intensifies and becomes very powerful. The transformational abilities linked to Pluto increase and the regenerative abilities are enhanced. Any power struggles can also become much more apparent when Pluto is in retrograde, so it is wise to avoid interaction that could lead to intense situations, especially if linked somehow to the planet Mars or Uranus. It may be very challenging to avoid situations that require change especially when Pluto transits a planet while in retrograde. It could be considered a time for cleansing and a time to release any worn out or outdated attitudes. It is as though you are addressing a list of things to do that was written last year.
