ASCENDANT OR RISING SIGN The Ascendant Sign or Rising Sign is descriptive of our outside personality, the one we reveal to the world. This will usually differ from our Sun Sign and this is a sure reason why some individuals are seen as quite different from the typical characteristics associated with their Sun Sign personality. No Retrograde Planets in a Chart The energies of a planets in retrograde in an Astrology chart tend to make us look inward. Those with several retrogrades in their chart (and the magic number seems to be 5) tend to be introverted, even subdued and much to themselves. The energies have difficulties working their way to the surface and are stifled. It takes great effort to bring the energies to the surface and make the necessary adjustments to challenge these so-called deficiencies. Personally, this Astrologer does not believe in deficiencies. I tend to look at it as harnessed energy waiting for the opportune moment to be released. Those people without retrogrades in their birth charts are in the minority. It is said that roughly seven percent of people have this phenomena. It is believed that the energies of all the planets are released and given free reign and allowed to flow freely. This in turn can create an individual who may lack patience and they often avoid using a cautious approach. The waiting game is not part of their nature and they much prefer to move things along. There is usually great energy behind these individuals and they work tirelessly towards the achievements of their objectives in life. They have strong willpower and are persistent in their efforts to succeed. They move forward similar to Aries often advancing with little afterthought, if any, and they rarely disbelieve in their own abilities. As a result, they are normally quite successful. Some individuals without retrograde planets in their chart do fall from time to time; however, this will not stop them from getting back up and moving ahead again. Their determination is steadfast and they rely on no one for approval or even assistance. They believe in their own abilities and also stand behind their failures for they are valuable lessons. These lessons are not cause for alarm. “Let’s just start again and see what happens” could be their motto. “If it does not work this time, perhaps it will the next time”, or “I will just need to make some minor adjustments” would be statements you would hear from these individuals. They are self-reliant and self-determined. These traits can make them great entrepreneurs. They are willing to take the plunge and often without much reserve. Most of these individuals would prefer to work alone. This, however, can make them somewhat aloof and even distant as they unconsciously withdraw into themselves. They may even feel misinterpreted and wrongly judged by others, because of this loner type mentality. But this is only in extreme cases and it is wise to take into consideration the whole chart before coming to any conclusions. There are many things in the chart that can offset some of these characteristics, but moving forward and going it alone is quite common for someone without retrograde planets in their natal chart. Mars in many cases is considered malefic in its expression and often denotes aggressive action and conflicts which on some level require strength and determination. Before we go into the return and its implications and consequences, we have to look at Mars’ placement within the natal chart. Is it well aspected especially by trine or sextile with the Sun, Venus or Jupiter? Is it poorly aspected especially by square or opposition and in some cases conjunct with Saturn, Uranus or Pluto? This will help define what we are working with when determining the influence related to Mars in this return cycle. Before we go into the return and its implications and consequences, we have to look at Mars’ placement within the natal chart. Because of Mars’ reputation of being a malefic energy, some Astrologers link its place in the natal chart as an area of conflict, but the resolution often can be obtained by facing things head on and believing that inner strength is part of our personal abilities. Mars is certainly in need of steadiness and control as well as direction and has been linked with accidents and struggle often requiring instruction. Many believe that Mars and its energies are something we need to worry about, but once again, we will need to look at the natal chart placement as well as other transiting and progressed factors present at that particular time to have a clear understanding of the energies at hand. Mars is also a timing tool and can be used when analyzing as something might occur and along with the Sun, Uranus and the progressed Moon, we will find that Mars can be quite accurate in determining when the energies are about to be released. Planetary Returns PLANETARY RETURNS All of the planets move around our Sun in the same direction and have their own cycle time depending on their distance from the Sun. The natal or birth chart is a snapshot of the heavens at the moment of our birth. From that moment on, the planets continue on their rotational path around the Sun and this continual movement of the planets is referred to as transiting planets. All of the planets eventually return to their original location that it was in at the moment of our birth (natal chart placement) but the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) take a long time to complete this cycle. Upon being at the same degree and sign that it was at the moment of birth, the planet has made its return. Each planet takes a different length of time. The inner planets move more quickly and the outer planets take a much longer time to return. We do not live long enough to experience some of the outer planet's return.
